Chloe Bailey struts down the promo track in support of his hot new single ‘Treat me’ – and his last stop was the popular YouTube series Terrell’s show.
During the fun singing session, the artist opened up about some of the behind-the-scenes realities of the music industry that people may not be as familiar with.
His words may (or may not) surprise you.

Asked about a fact about the music industry that people don’t know, the 23-year-old came across as very candid and refreshing (compared to some of her peers when asked about the topic) .
Because she replied:
“You can make music all day, [but] — especially if you’re signed to a label — you can’t control your release date.
Also, musicians don’t make a lot of money in the music industry. That’s why you see a lot of people – they have brand deals and brand sponsorships because that’s where the piece came from. And on tour. But [with] the music itself, you are actually losing money”
Expanding on the latter, Bailey said:
“Oh, do you want to know anything else?” I learned that ’cause I was producing me and my sister’s records [Chloe x Halle]. Outside producers will receive a huge lump sum. But as I was producing the records of my sister and me, I could not be paid because I was a producer within the group.
And also, I don’t know if that’s changed within the GRAMMYs, but you know how they get Producer of the Year? I learned from Imogen Heap…because she produces a lot of her stuff. Grimes too, Bjork too. They could not claim the title of Producer of the Year, because they were the ones who produced their own works and not [producing] for the others. And notice that these are just the women I named.
Looking at the tops, the Stage Blazer concluded by saying:
“The advantage is that even if you lose money in the music industry, you get a piece of everything that comes from the music you make. So music is almost like advertising. It’s a company. And it’s sad to think of it that way, but that’s why touring is growing…that’s where you make your money. And the offers of the big brands.
This is a fact that few people ignore. They think it’s this huge big life thing. Yes, you may receive a huge lump sum at the start or you may have a huge recording budget and you think the label is paying for it. But, at the end of the day, you pay for it. it comes out of you [your budget]. Whatever you get from this album, you get that after everything that has been paid. So it’s like a loan.
I’m learning – especially now as a solo artist – I have to wear many hats. Me, as a creative, that’s where I want to spend the most time. But I also have to put my entrepreneurial spirit. Because if you don’t, you could get screwed.

We’ve long enjoyed acts that keep it at 100 during their grind. Especially when it biases pedagogically, as is the case here.
The music industry has changed a lot lately and as always is not for the faint hearted.
