‘Flee’, ‘The Velvet Underground’ and ‘Summer Of Soul’ nominated for Doc NYC | New

Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, has unveiled the shortlist for the Best Feature Films section for its 2021 edition, which will take place in person and online from November 10-18, 2021.

Among the shortlisted titles is To flee, which Denmark presented for the best international Oscar category. The film directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen has already won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema – Documentary competition at Sundance. It focuses on an Afghan refugee as he makes a major personal reveal, using animation to enhance the story.

Musical documentaries The velvet metro – a Cannes track by Todd Haynes on the influential New York avant-garde rock group of the 1960s – and the track Sundance by Questlove Summer Of Soul (… or when the revolution couldn’t be televised), about a 1969 festival dubbed “Black Woodstock”, were also shortlisted.

The shortlist is overseen by artistic director Thom Powers in consultation with the festival’s programming team. The titles will compete for prizes in four categories: direction, production, cinematography and editing. The awards will be selected by a three-person jury, filmmakers Nadia Hallgren, Kimberly Reed and Hao Wu.

Last year’s winners were Time (direction), Welcome to Chechnya (produce), Boys state (editing) and 76 days (cinematography).

The festival will offer a main program of 127 feature films and 125 short films. For eight of the past nine years, Doc NYC has screened the Oscar-winning feature documentary for Best Documentary, until last year, when the festival did not screen the Netflix film. My octopus teacher.
