Musicians take part in the first round of Tennessee Songwriters Week

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — The Delta Heritage Center hosted one of three annual Tennessee Songwriters Week series.

“We are currently in the qualifying rounds. We are one of six West Tennessee locations holding qualifying between Jan. 30 and Feb. 12, Clark said.

Clark says the contest winners will have the opportunity to compete against other entrants from different parts of Tennessee.

“The winner of this contest and the other contest in West Tennessee will travel to the Lafayette Music Hall on February 22 in Memphis. The winner there will travel to the Bluebird in Nashville in March to compete against other winners across the state,” Clark said.

She says that even though she’s not musically inclined, it means the world to her to be a part of music history in West Tennessee.

“With songwriters writing original music and making history right now, I’m personally really excited to be involved in that and part of that, knowing that there’s music that’s played here today that is going to be heard from now on,” Clark said.

Travis Roberson, a musician from Dyersburg says he just wants the chance to test his abilities against other artists.

“For me, it’s not about winning or losing. I mean, I’ll go where they want me to go if I win but, if I don’t, I’m still going to write songs, you know,” Roberson said.

He also says that it’s up to musicians to aspire to the life they want and if you want fame and glory you have to work harder than anyone else.

If you want to be in the spotlight, you have to figure out how to be the best performer you can be. Do you know what I’m saying? It’s tif for tat. You have to choose who you want to be and do it,” Roberson said.

A fan of the pageant says she entered the local scene when her husband decided to take the microphone.

“You have to be there for them because they train a lot, but I’m with them 100%,” Rogers said.
