The Soul Train Music Awards recognize the best in music and entertainment in African American culture. This year’s award will take place on November 20, 2021 at the Apollo Theater.
The Soul Train Awards nomination comes shortly after Starboy Wizkid announced his fifth studio album. The afrobeats singer and songwriter took to his Instagram page last Saturday, saying his next album would drop on the last day of his Made in Lagos tour. He also gave the track ‘More Love, Less Ego’, while promising his fans and followers that they wouldn’t wait too long for the album. The Made in Lagos tour will end in Montreal, Canada on January 22, 2022.
Remember that it took a little over three years for the Grammy-winning artist to release his latest album. Sharing a photo of the cover of his album Made in Lagos, the singer wrote in the caption: â1 year already! Thanks for riding with me. I’m just so grateful for all the love and blessings. Promise not to make you wait too long for the next one. âMore Love Less Egoâ falls on the last day of the tour! I love you! âTheâ made in Lagos âstar made it known by celebrating a solid year of her latest album which earned her tremendous accolades.
Made in Lagos featured artists spanning genres and geography – Projexx and Damian Marley from Jamaica, Ella Mai and Skepta from the UK, Tems, Burna, Tay Iwar and Terri from Nigeria, and HER from the US. The album broke records internationally, streaming over a billion times.
It also produced the first African hit â1 of the Billboard Hot 100 top 10. Even more, on August 31, 2021, Wizkid’s “Essence” with Tems became the most searched song on the music research platform, Shazam. . It also went platinum in the United States. In some circles, âEssence,â a worldwide hit by the Nigerian pop star, was the only serious contender for the song of the summer. A Justin Bieber remix released in August surely didn’t hurt the affair. âHe loved the record, and I just wanted to hear what he would do on it,â Wizkid said of the Bieber collaboration. “And I heard it and it was drugs, so why not?” Wizkid told Rolling Stone magazine a fortnight ago.
âEssenceâ and its remix have undoubtedly raised Wizkid’s profile abroad, but he’s been making brilliant Afropop for over a decade, and Western stars have been taking notice for years. In March, he won his first Grammy, for his role in Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” music video, a Lion King: The Gift track he appeared on; prior to that, he appeared on Drake’s 2016 hit “One Dance”. With his fourth studio album, Made in Lagos, Wizkid has solidified his position as one of Africa’s most notable artists, with a vision and reach that extends far beyond his home.
