Summer is coming to an end and Yollocalli Arts Scope, the free arts education program for young people offered by the National Museum of Mexican Art, looks back on another landmark program in the city with an exhibition. Find out what mediums, styles and ideas have captivated the children of Pilsen this season at Malinalli Garden (2800 S. Ridgeway), a community garden located across from Yollocalli’s main offices in Little Village. The work of Yollocalli Summer Workshop participants will be on view today from 4-6 p.m. (MC)
Slo’ Mo, a grassroots party that leans heavily on R&B, funk and disco, celebrates 11 years of female-focused queer dance. The celebration kicks off at Sleeping Village (3734 W. Belmont) at 8 p.m. with a mezcal tasting hosted by Del Maguey. Next, Your Godmutha Tristen and Party Mom Kristen take the mic while Lovenloops and Vitigrrl take over the DJ booth to get people moving and dancing. Food will be available all night from a Taylor’s Tacos pop-up. Note that Sleeping Village is wheelchair accessible throughout, but party planners have a dedicated wheelchair space near the sound booth. Tickets are available on a sliding scale ($10 to $20) and 10% of sales will benefit the SmallWORLD collective. Proof of vaccination is required, but masks are not, although they are strongly encouraged. So much so that you can request one on the spot! Music editor Leor Galil recently wrote about Die and Rebornthe first LP of the duo Chicago Research Conjunto Primitivo which combines reggaeton with industrial music. Tonight they’re hosting their record release party at Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western), and they’ll be joined by electronic musicians Jenniferfauxxpez, Don Crescendo and Otra Dek, who are said to be DJing alongside Sard. (It’s not really a rumor, the Detroit transplant announced it on its Instagram two days ago.) The show starts at 10 p.m. and costs $10. You’ll want to buy ahead or arrive early, though; it’s a powerful evening of electronic music with industrial influences that will bring together several stages! Curious Theater Branch, purveyors of the annual and not-to-be-missed Rhino Fest, offers Returning Home: With or Without Roommates, a sample board of three new two-character plays from co-founders Jenny Magnus and Beau O’Reilly, plus Myle Yan Tay, in the cozy upstairs space of Jimmy Beans. At O’Reilly’s Benny and Margaret say goodbye, directed by Side Project founder Adam Webster, a longtime couple “confess and clash.” by Magnus The staff (which she also directs), stars her husband and child, Stefan and Lena Brün, and involves two people in a play, where, “like coincident spheres, they float around each other, riding”. And that of Yan Tay Fandom delves into player culture (playwright directs). It opens tonight at 8:00 p.m. and runs Friday through Saturday from 8:00 p.m. until 8/20 at Jimmy Beans, 2553 W. Fullerton; tickets are $15 or pay what you can through brownpapertickets.com. An accessible performance is also scheduled for Sunday, 8/21 at 3:00 p.m. at the Facility Theater, 1138 N.
